Welcome to Public Safety

Although no institution today can guarantee security and safety, High Point University intends to be as safe as any institution of higher education. Safety and security are encouraged by a professional security force, a student bike patrol, a campus escort service, good campus lighting, accessible blue security posts and yellow emergency call boxes, peep holes on doors to student rooms and residence halls which are secured on a 24-hour basis.

University Safety Officers.
Trained, uniformed safety officers employed by the University seek to maintain the safety and security of persons and property on campus on a 24-hour basis. These officers are required to investigate and report criminal activity. A copy of their report is filed with the director of public safety and distributed to selected campus administrators, including the dean of students. The director of public safety and/or the dean of students will follow up on such reports and, where appropriate, report such violations to appropriate law enforcement agencies. Although campus safety officers are not armed and do not have the power of arrest, they maintain constant radio access to High Point police who will be called to campus as needed.

University Bike Patrol.
The bike patrol consists of students on work-study or workship who patrol the campus regularly during selected hours in order to provide auxiliary support for the University's professional security force. The bike patrol exists to enhance the safety and security of persons and property. For purposes of identification, members of the patrol wear special uniforms; and they are equipped with two-way radios. Among other duties, they assist students who request escorts and summon security by two-way radio if they identify suspicious persons or activities.

Off-Duty Police Officers.
In order to encourage safety and security of persons and property, High Point University employs off-duty police officers, who ordinarily are employed full-time by the High Point Police Department, to patrol the campus during selected hours.  Although these officers are employed in an effort to ensure the security of persons and property, they are armed and they do have the power of arrest.

Crimestoppers.
The Office of Public Safety maintains a crimestoppers site for anonymously reporting suspicious activity on campus.  Please report any suspicious activity or persons to the crimestoppers link.  You may furnish your contact information if you wish to speak with security personnel.  If the suspicious activity or persons require immediate attention, please contact our office by telephone at extension 9111.
