What to Expect

What can I expect from Counseling Services?
High Point University students (who are currently enrolled in courses), faculty and staff may receive counseling services, and there is no cost. The initial intake with your counselor will be to discuss your concerns and identify how Counseling Services may assist you.

The Office of Counseling is responsible for delivering a broad range of mental health services to the University community which may include the following:

Individual counseling
Group therapy
Psycho educational workshops
Referral to other specialists
Referral to our staff psychiatrist for an evaluation for medication
24-hour crisis response
Faculty/Staff consultation
Outreach
Training

Counseling Services Staff is committed to helping you get the most out of your college experience by offering individual counseling in which you can explore in a confidential setting concerns including:

Anxiety
Eating Disorders
Sexuality Issues 
Traumatic Experiences
Substance Abuse
Depression
Grief and Loss
Relationship Difficulties
Stress and Time Management
Adjustment  Disorders

Our Counseling Staff work from a solution-focused, long-term orientation emphasizing client strengths.

Other services provided by Counseling Services includes Psychoeducational Workshops designed to enhance your personal and academic skills and teach more effective strategies for coping with problems.

Group Counseling is also offered to focused on a particular issue or concern. Often times learning how to use your own strengths in daily situations in a supportive environment will help you to resolve problems.

We also offer confidential screenings by appointment only, for depression, eating disorders, and substance abuse. Following the screening, a follow-up appointment will be recommended by your counselor to assess a treatment plan that best meets your needs.

Referrals
A referral to another agency or person, may be recommended and facilitated by Counseling Services to ensure your needs are met. We also may make a referral to our staff psychiatrist for an evaluation for medication. Clients are responsible for fees when referred to off-campus resources.

The counseling staff adheres to the ethical guidelines set forth by the National Board for Certified Counselors.
