High Point University First Generation Scholarships Guilford County School Students from High Point
High Point University (HPU) will award two prestigious First Generation Scholarships to Guilford County School students from High Point, North Carolina. In order to qualify, an applicant must be: the first generation in their family to pursue a college degree; must be a high school graduate from one of the Guilford County Schools; and live within the city limits of High Point. This scholarship opportunity is expected to be highly competitive and will include books, and other related expenses during the academic year. The awards will be renewable for an additional three years provided that all academic renewal requirements are met and a clear social record is maintained. Summer terms are included in this scholarship program.
General Criteria for First Generation Scholarships
As a part of the application process, on or before January 15th applicants will be required to submit an essay of 500 words or less describing the impact of being the first person from his/her immediate family to attend college along with their academic accomplishments during their high school experience. In addition, applicants must:
- Demonstrate how he/she is the first in this/her immediate family to attend college;
- Demonstrate financial need as defined by FAFSA;
- Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 from their high school courses;
- Provide a written recommendation from a high school teacher or administrator;
- Must have attended either Andrews High School, High Point Central High School, Ragsdale High School, or Southwest Guilford High School for at least 3 years prior to graduation;
- Be a United States Citizen;
- Meet all of the admissions criteria established by High Point University;
- Possess a record of community service; and
- Demonstrate self-motivation along with academic and leadership potential.
Application for Admission Process
Students must submit the following documentation and be admitted to the university to be eligible for scholarship consideration:
- Submission of the First Generation Application Materials as listed above;
- An online application for admissions to High Point University, www.highpoint.edu/undergraduate;
- Official high school transcripts
- Scores on either the SAT or ACT test; and
- A Guidance Counselor Report Form.
It is recommended that students applying for this First Generation Scholarship apply for admission under the Early Action program with a deadline for submitting the above admission documents of November 9th. However students may apply under Regular Admission until January 15th.
The following high school courses are required for freshman admissions to High Point University in the day program:
- English – 4 Units;
- Mathematics – 3 Units (Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry required);
- Second Language – 2 Units (May be waived since Engish will be considered as a foreign language for students who speak English as a second language);
- Social Studies – 3 Units; and
- Science – 3 Units (Two or more of the following: Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Physics, Physical Science).
