Transitions Seminar
Transition to College for Students with Disabilities
On March 27, April 17, and June 26, 2009 at 11:30 a.m., High Point University will host the 5th annual Transitions seminar for college-bound juniors and seniors and their parents. The seminar will be held in Room 101 Norton Hall (Lazy-Boy Room).
The seminar will focus on transition issues that students with disabilities may face as they prepare to enter a college or university. Information provided will be valuable regardless of which college or university a student has chosen to attend.
Topics include:
• Differences in disability law between secondary and higher education
• Documentation that most colleges require
• Translating the IEP/504 Plan into college accommodations
• Confidentiality issues & restrictions on communication
• Self-advocacy & student responsibilities
• Requesting accommodations
• Finding an on-campus advocate
Students are invited to participate in a specialized session:
• When and how to disclose a disability
• Students’ need to talk about their disability and their needs
• Requesting accommodations vs. trying to do without
• Professor expectations
• Finding a voice & an on-campus advocate
• Services offered at most colleges: counseling, health, academic, student life
• Developing coping skills
High school juniors and seniors and their parents are strongly encouraged to attend, while younger students and their parents are also welcome.
