High Point University fully supports the efforts and welfare of all its students. The University faculty and staff are mindful of the diversity of the student body and act in ways to promote the academic success of each individual. One such avenue of support lies in the provision of reasonable accommodations to eligible students who have one or more diagnosed disabilities, as defined in the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). High Point University is fully committed to comply with all legally mandated requirements.
Student Self-Advocacy. In higher education, students with disabilities are expected to advocate for themselves. Therefore, the responsibility of declaring a disability, requesting accommodations, and filing grievances falls on the student. Students who request disability-related services must:
Declare their disability to the Director of the Academic Services Center (ASC) prior to the request for accommdoation or course substitution;
Complete and sign an ADA Intake Form, which includes a Release of Information & Student Rights and Responsibilities Statement. The Release of Information authorizes the ASC Director to release the student's documentation for review and to communicate needs to the appropriate faculty and other campus officials having legitimate interest in the student's success at the University;
- Provide current, relevant diagnostic documentation of the disability;
- Request the necessary educational accommodations, as well as any housing or campus access requests, in a timely manner;
- Work professionally with the ASC staff, faculty, housing and other campus officials to arrange and schedule the appropriate accommodations;
- Verify that accommodations are in place and are meeting their needs; and
- Provide written notification to the ASC Director of any disability-related grievances.
- Mail or fax ADA Intake Form and diagnostic documentation to: (336) 888-5123, ATTN: Irene Ingersoll.
Confidentiality. All student records, including diagnostic documentation, accommodations, and course substitution requests, are kept in strict confidence. Information will not be released in a manner other than that noted on the ADA Intake Form. Information regarding diagnosis or treatment will not be released without written permission from the student. Instead, all arrangements are made based on the need for accommodation rather than the diagnosis or the nature of the disability.
More Information. Contact Irene Ingersoll, Assistant Director/Coordinator of Disability Services at (336) 841-9037, with questions regarding services, documentation, accommodations, or any other disability-related matter.
