Supplemental Instruction
The Supplemental Instruction (SI) program at High Point University began in 2000. SI was viewed as an opportunity to enhance academic support opportunities to students available from the ASC.
Briefly, the SI program consists of an SI Leader (tutor) in an instructional classroom. The SI Leader is responsible for attending a pre-selected class. Having an SI Leader proves advantageous to students in the class because the SI Leader is listening to the lecture and receiving the same information the students are hearing. When it comes time for tutorial sessions, the SI Leader can review class material efficiently because they know exactly how it was presented to the class by the professor.
SI Leaders must maintain a minimum overall 3.0 GPA, made an A in the class they want to SI, and be approved by the ASC as well as the faculty member whose class the student chooses to SI. Also, the SI Leader must have completed or be currently enrolled in Level I CRLA Tutor Certification. The goal of SI is to improve retention rates in classes where an SI Leader is available.
