Minors

Definition:
The Undergraduate Bulletin states that a "minor is a short sequence of courses, normally requiring a minimum of 18 semester hours, but departments may require more than the minimum. Courses taken to satisfy the minor will be taken for a grade; a 2.0 GPA is required; no more than one D grade is permitted; one half of the courses must be taken at High Point University."

Selecting a Minor:
A minor should support and/or enhance a student's major degree. A minor taken by a student is designed to permit a student to explore a subject area or acquire a limited background in an additional and/or different academic area. It is not designed to make one's transcript or resume' look better.

While it is possible to add a minor in some areas by simply taking one or two additional courses due to the excessive overlap of course requirements, a wise student will maintain the integrity of their major degree by selecting minors that enhance their major not simply be an added extension thereof. Therefore, it is recommended that any minor that is added by a student should have at least four new courses not related or required of their major. This will assure the academic integrity of both your major and your minor.
