This program provides the opportunity for High Point Students to learn about and experience British Life and Culture in one of Britain’s most exciting cities. The British Life and Culture course is taught by a local professor from St. Mary’s University College and includes excursions to historical and cultural venues throughout London and the surrounding areas.

Students in this program will have the chance to spend four weeks in one of Britain’s most magnificent areas of natural beauty. Students will live and study at Swansea University and will take a course in Welsh Life and Culture from a local professor. The course will also include excursions to local historical landmarks and cultural points of interest. In May of 2008, the Welsh Life and Culture trip will also offer a one-unit course in Hiking (PEC 125), which will allow students to take even greater advantage of the beautiful location in Swansea and earn an additional course credit.

Contemporary Ireland is a comprehensive study of Irish culture and society involving application of on campus study to actual experiences while on a 12 day comprehensive tour to Ireland. Participants will examine Irish profit and nonprofit organizations, Irish politics, literature, and cultural opportunities. This journey can meet the Global Studies requirement for graduation and is led by two HPU professors who have extensive experience in domestic and foreign travel with college students. Space is limited to 24 participants. HPU Students, parents, and alumni are welcome to participate. Students may select for credit or not for credit.

Students spend three weeks at Southwestern University in Chongqing studying Chinese language and Chinese cultural traditions. The course in Chinese language is taught by a Chinese professor from Chongqing University and the course in Chinese culture is taught by a HPU faculty member from China. Students live at Chongqing University and receive instruction in Chinese martial arts (kung fu), Chinese ink painting and calligraphy and Chinese cooking. Excursions to The Forbidden City, The Great Wall, The Shanghai Bund and the Pudong district are also included.

This program provides the opportunity for students to enjoy a unique business and cultural experience that will broaden their understanding of global business practice. Students will take a course in Global Political Economy (ECO 374) on campus at High Point University in early May and then travel to London for ten days, returning to High Point in late May. This program is a perfect opportunity for those with especially busy schedules, such as those in the EDP program, to participate in an HPU study abroad program.
Course dates are May 12-29, 2008 and tentative travel dates are May 16-25, 2008.

This program provides a special opportunity for EDP students to enhance their understanding of the visual world around them through travel and study in Florence, Italy. Students will enroll in either ART 120 (Human Dimensions of Art) or ART 388 (Special Topics Italian Renaissance Art) and participate in five course meetings at High Point University in the spring of 2008. The group will then travel for ten days in Italy.
Travel dates are May 16-25, 2008.

Members of the High Point University Choir have the opportunity to perform in one of the most historic churches of the Baroque Era. Students will study repertoire in the spring of 2008 and then present it at St. Nicolas Church in Leipzig, Germany under the direction of world renowned conductor Sir Jonathan Wilcocks. Those who are interested should register for University Singers and or MUS 345 (Music Literature) as well as MUS 188 (Special Topics: German Choral Repertoire).

High Point University Students have the chance to study at the prestigious Oxford-Brookes University in Oxford, England. Qualified students can spend the fall of their junior year in one of the greatest educational centers of the world while living in an on-campus residence hall. A wide variety of courses are offered, making this program especially appealing to those students with interests in the social and natural sciences, history, education, and English. A faculty member from High Point University will accompany the group and remain in residence in Oxford throughout the semester.
Students may spend the fall or spring semester studying at St..Mary’s University College located on the west side of London in the Borough of Richmond Upon Thames. Students can take classes in all areas of study, including sports rehabilitation, sport science and media studies. Students are housed with local British families and have numerous opportunities for sightseeing and interaction with local students.
High Point University offers students the opportunity to spend the fall or spring semester of their junior year at the Studio Art Centers International (SACI). This program is specifically designed for students who wish to study Art History, Studio Art, Interior Design or Communications. SACI is located at the Palazzo dei Cartelloni, a Renaissance building in the heart of Florence, and students live in apartments throughout the city. Prior knowledge of Italian language is not required and students have the opportunity to take introductory courses in Italian language through SACI.
Well qualified students have the opportunity to spend their fall semester of their junior year studying at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland’s oldest university. Students take courses in a variety of subjects and live in residence halls or flats on campus. Students have ample opportunity to interact with local students and residents.
High Point University students may spend the fall or spring semester at Swansea University. Located in one of Britain’s most dramatic locales, Swansea University offers a wide variety of courses, making this an ideal program for students from all academic majors. Optional pre-sessional programs in London and Swansea allow students to take a course in local history and culture and internship opportunities are also available. Students are housed near the university campus.

Students are also encouraged to visit the High Point University Office of Study Abroad located on the third floor of the Slane Student Center.
Through special affiliations with a number of institutions High Point University is able to offer students the opportunity to spend a semester or year studying foreign language in France, Germany, or Spain. Costs of the programs vary depending on the institution involved. Participants in these study abroad programs are representatives of High Point University abroad and are expected to act in a mature and responsible manner. Applicants for study abroad programs must undergo a rigorous screening process. Selection criteria include academic achievement, evidence of ability to work and function independently in unfamiliar surroundings, and evidence of mature and responsible behavior.
Qualified students may apply to study French during their junior year at the University of Paris (The Sorbonne). Students generally live with French families.
Through an affiliation with Schiller International University, qualified High Point University students may apply to spend a semester of their junior year in Heidelberg. Students may live in student housing or with German families.
Qualified students may apply to study Spanish during their junior year at the Spanish-American Institute in Seville. Students live with Spanish families. Students who successfully complete the specified study abroad program will be granted a full semester or year's credit by High Point University. The study abroad experience will satisfy the General Education requirement in International Perspectives. Foreign Language
French-language students have the opportunity to study French language and Business at either the Burgundy School of Business in Dijon, France or at Euromed-Center for European and International Management Studies in Marseilles, France. Those with the necessary skills in French language may participate in an optional three-week internship program at the end of the study program.
Students wishing to study Spanish language can travel to Puebla, Mexico and study at the Universidad Madero, a small Methodist university. Students spend three weeks living with local host families and taking courses with local students. Excursions to nearby cities are also included. A High Point University faculty member accompanies the group.
High Point University will accept transfer credits from the following institutions for summer or semester study. Qualified students apply directly to the institution in Mexico or Canada. Credit must be arranged through the Office of the Registrar prior to the experience abroad.
Credits for the study of French are accepted from the Universite Laval in Quebec, Canada.
Credits for the study of Spanish are accepted from the Universidad Madero in Puebla, Mexico.
High Point University will accept transfer credits for summer study abroad from programs administered by an institution accredited in the United States.
Credit must be arranged through the Office of the Registrar prior to the experience abroad. In addition to semester and junior year programs, the Department of Modern Foreign Languages offers qualified students the opportunity to apply for participation in a number of summer study abroad programs for credit in French German, and Spanish.
